WATCH: Pregnant News Anchor Goes Into Labor On Live TV — And Stays On Air to Finish Broadcast
“We do have some breaking news this morning,” said CBS 6 Albany anchor Julia Dunn at the outset of the station’s morning show Wednesday.
And she wasn’t kidding.
Dunn reported that her pregnant co-anchor, Olivia Jacquith, had just gone into labor.
“Olivia’s water has broke, and she is anchoring the news now in active labor,” Dunn said.
“Early labor, early labor,” Jaquith said, clarifying.
“We’ve been timing her contractions,” Dunn added. “Two minutes apart?”
“No!” Jaquith replied. “Well, there was one, but it’s been a few minutes since then, so we’re still in good shape.”
Dunn made clear that Jaquith was there by choice and that she was perfectly fine to take over solo. But Jaquith wanted to stay.
“I’m happy to be here, and I’ll stay on the desk for as long as I possibly can,” Jaquith said. “But if I disappear, that’s what’s going on.”
Incredibly, Jaquith kept going, and did indeed finish out the broadcast.
“Three hours of news in contractions,” Dunn marveled. “I think that’s a first for CBS 6.”
Actually, it was even more than that. Dunn shared that Jaquith’s water had broken at 4:15 a.m. And she stayed on the air until 8 a.m.
“Hopefully, I don’t see you tomorrow,” Jaquith said to close the show.
And indeed, she was absent from the next day’s broadcast — as she gave birth to a baby boy named Quincy, the station reported.
“I wasn’t 100 percent sure what was happening at first, but I figured the time is going to pass either way, so I’d rather spend three hours advancing the stories of the day than nervously waiting around at the hospital,” Jaquith told the Albany Times-Union. “Having the entire morning team alongside me cracking jokes helped me get through contractions much easier.”
