Canadian Parliament Debates Whether the Word ‘Fart’ is Offensive

fartThe Canadian parliament ably demonstrated Friday that the United States does not have a monopoly on dumb and petty political controversies, with a legislative debate over whether or not the word “fart” is obscene.

Conservative Member of Parliament Michelle Rempel was giving a floor speech accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s administration of ignoring the economic concerns of the Western provinces. “Why does this government treat Alberta like a fart in the room that nobody wants to talk about or acknowledge?” she asked. “That is where my constituents have been at with this government for over a year.”

Green Party leader Elizabeth May took exception to the flatulent metaphor. “I heard her say a word that I know is distinctly un-parliamentary, and I think she may want to withdraw it,” Mary said, before helpfully adding: “The word was F-A-R-T.”

Unsurprisingly, Rempel did not apologize. “I just gave an impassioned speech about supporting Alberta jobs and that’s what the leader of a political party stands up and has to say? No, I don’t withdraw it,” she said.
