Elon Musk has abandoned his promise that his social media platform X would be “politically neutral.” Instead, it has turned it into a “pro-Trump machine,” openly using it to attack Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a damning new report.
In an article published Wednesday, CNN senior correspondent Donie O’Sullivan claimed that Musk himself has amplified misogynistic views and spread disinformation, interrogating the billionaire’s unaccountability regarding violations of his company policies.
O’Sullivan began by retelling how, on Monday, Musk posted an AI-generated image of Harris dressed in a communist uniform, captioning it with: “Kamala vows to be a communist dictator on day one. Can you believe she wears that outfit!?”
The post, which has garnered nearly 60 million views within 24 hours, clearly violated X’s policy on manipulated content. O’Sullivan pointed out that this is just the latest in a series of provocative actions by Musk, who has openly endorsed Donald Trump for president.
The fake Harris image came hot on the heels of another disturbing post by Musk, the CNN journalist reported. He shared a sexist post on Tuesday that appeared to have originated a hate-filled board on notorious forum website 4Chan, suggesting that only “high-status males” should be allowed in government. Musk commented on the post to his 196 million followers with the words that it was an “interesting observation.”
Despite touting X’s “community notes” as a fact-checking feature, neither of these posts received any scrutiny.
O’Sullivan wrote:
Musk’s defenders, of which there are many who are vocal on X, have attempted to argue that some posts like these are satirical or are not meant to be taken seriously.
But Musk is taken seriously. He is one of the world’s most powerful people who controls one of the world’s most important online platforms on the precipice of an historic American presidential election where he is actively campaigning for a candidate.
O’Sullivan argued that In a stark contrast to his previous claims of keeping X, in his own words, “politically neutral”, that Musk’s actions have shown the opposite.
During the 2024 presidential election and backing Trump, however, O’Sullivan said that “the lack of scrutiny” Musk’s own posts receive “from his company’s own fact-checking system” now “lay bare” his deeper agenda of turning X into a “pro-Trump machine.”
