NewsNation anchor and former Fox News political editor Chris Stirewalt called out President Donald Trump’s base in a recent appearance on The Remnant with Jonah Goldberg, arguing that they won’t let the GOP win because “they think that winning is for losers.”
“They asked people by vote, if you voted for Donald Trump, how do you think he’s doing? Among the people who were the least enthusiastic about voting for Donald Trump, he was down 25 points,” observed Stirewalt of a recent poll on The Remnant. “So, the problem of MAGA, and the problem of all of it is: it’s a audience capture — huge difficulty. Which is they’re not going to accept the other part — that 30% of the electorate will accept no substitutes, will accept no imitation. They want the hardest core version of it possible. Republicans cannot keep a coalition together with just those folks. The bid price is too high.”
“And it’s a Ken Paxton problem, it’s a Marjorie Taylor Greene problem. It’s the problem that they are gonna keep running into,” he continued. “And by the way, it’s the one that Democrats are getting ready to confront. Democrats are right now getting ready to confront a very similar problem, which is: will their base let them win? I don’t think the MAGA base will let Republicans win. I think that they think that winning is for losers, and they’re not going to allow it.”
Stirewalt, who was let go by Fox amid MAGA blowback over the network’s decision to correctly call Arizona for Joe Biden relatively early on election night 2020, is a critic of the president.
In a column for The Dispatch last month, Stirewalt warned that Trump might be serious about pursuing a third term, calling it a “credible threat.”
