‘I Just Want an Answer!’ Stephanopoulos Cuts Off Interview After Steve Scalise Dodges FIVE TIMES on Whether 2020 Election Was Stolen
“Can you say unequivocally the 2020 election was not stolen?”
That was the question ABC’s George Stephanopoulos put to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) during a contentious interview on This Week. And he asked the question again… and again… and again.
And he got no answer again … and again … and again.
Five different times in a three-minute span, Stephanopoulos tried to pin Scalise down his very direct question. But Scalise refused to commit either way.
“There are states that didn’t follow their laws,” Scalise said. “That is what the state constitution, the U.S. Constitution requires. You know, I’ve seen in my own state where we had to send our elections commissioner to jail years ago for fraud and corruption, and we cleaned up our act in our state. Every state ought to follow the laws that are on their books. That’s what the U.S. Constitution says.”
“That’s not what I asked,” Stephanopoulos said. “Can you say unequivocally the 2020 election was not stolen?”
Attempt number two proved as fruitless as number one.
“Look, Joe Biden’s president,” Stephanopoulos said. “I know you and others want to talk about 2020. We’re focused on the future. We’ve talked about 2020 a lot.”
The House majority leader continued to stonewall by going a tangent about broader global issues. After Scalise finished, Stephanopoulos tried again.
“I’m asking you a different question,” he said. “Can you say unequivocally that the 2020 election was not stolen?”
“You want to keep rehashing 2020,” Scalise shot back.
“I just want an answer to the question!” Stephanopoulos fumed, visibly losing patience. “Yes or no?”
Scalise tried to flip the question on his interrogator.
“Will you acknowledge that there were states that didn’t follow the actual state legislative enacted laws on their books, which the US Constitution says they’re supposed to do?” Scalise asked.
Stephanopolous replied by citing the multiple court decisions dismissing challenges to the 2020 results.
“I asked you a very, very simple question,” Stephanopoulos said. “Now I’ve asked it, I think (this is) the fifth time that you can’t appear to answer. Can you say unequivocally the 2020 election was not stolen?”
“There were a handful of states that didn’t follow the laws that were on the books,” Scalise said, again dodging. “They went to secretaries of state to change the rules of the game. And then the voters didn’t know what the rules were because ultimately the state laws weren’t followed in those states. That’s not what the US Constitution says. At some point we should go back to following the Constitution, George.”
“The courts have all followed the Constitution,” Stephanopoulos said. “They all rejected the claims you just made.”
The ABC host tried one last time.
“Yes or no, was the 2020 election stolen?”
“What I’ve told you is Joe Biden is the President of United States and right now is failing the country on so many fronts that matter to families,” Scalise said — before launching into a broad criticism of the president.
Finally, Stephanopoulos threw in the towel.
“Thanks for your time,” he said curtly — cutting off the intertview.
