Trump Spox Encourages Migrants to ‘Self-Deport’ to Avoid Ending Up in ‘Fun Videos’ Depicting Mass Deportations
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt encouraged migrants to “self-deport” on an app to avoid being included in online videos of mass deportations.
On Monday, the official X/Twitter account for the White House posted an upbeat video of the latest round of deportations. In the video, multiple men were shown in handcuffs as they were led onto a plane. The men were accused of being members of a Venezuelan gang and sent to El Salvador’s maximum security prison CECOT. Also included in the video was the 1998 song “Closing Time” by the band Semisonic.
The video was the latest effort from President Donald Trump’s administration to utilize social media trends. Several weeks prior, the White House account posted a video titled “ASMR: Illegal Alien Deportation Flight.”
During her briefing Monday, Leavitt was asked about the use of the mobile app CBP Home. Migrants can use it to apply for entry into the country, check wait times at the U.S. border, and even “notify the U.S. Government of their intent to depart.”
Leavitt encouraged more migrants to do the latter.
“I would have to check in with the Department of Homeland Security, but it’s a great question,” Leavitt said when asked if any migrants have self-deported, “and we’re very proud to repurpose this app, which the Biden administration abused to facilitate the mass illegal entry of illegal immigrants into our country. It was like a fast pass at Disneyland. That’s not happening under this administration. We are encouraging illegal immigrants to actively self-deport to maybe save themselves from being in one of these fun videos.”
