Kellyanne Conway Blows Up at Reporters For Asking About Trump Blowing His Own Deadline on Health Care
Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway got upset with reporters for asking about President Donald Trump‘s failure to meet a two-week deadline for announcing major health care news, a deadline that Trump himself imposed.
On June 14, during a Rose Garden rolling out new regulations on Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs), Trump boasted that “we’re now working with Congress to pass legislation that ends surprise medical billing,” and then promised “we’re going to have another big announcement in two weeks, unrelated but something that’s going to have a profound effect on the things that we’re talking about and have been talking about over the last two and a half years.”
“It’s going to be something really incredible,” Trump said, and repeated “That’ll take place over the next two weeks. That’ll be a very big announcement. Nobody knows what it is. It’s going to be a big surprise, but it’s going to be a very pleasant one.”
During an impromptu gaggle on the White House driveway Tuesday morning, NBC News’ Peter Alexander asked Conway about the two-week surprise Trump promised 18 days ago, and Conway bristled at the deadline that Trump himself had set.
“On June 14th, the president said that there would be a major announcement in terms of healthcare in 2 weeks, 2 weeks have passed, what is that major announcement?” Alexander asked.
“Do you know what the HRA’s are? Do you know what transparency is? Surprise medical billing?” Conway asked, referencing the two things that Trump was literally announcing 1 days ago, the announcement about which Alexander was asking.
“Is that the major announcement?” Alexander asked.
“No, I’m just asking if you’re even up on these because I don’t think you covered them at all,” Conway said, and added “Those are major announcements to the public. We’re doing building blocks in healthcare, and the president, actually, I’m one of the ones who works on his plan here, we have a great team, really smart people working on his plan. We’ll be with the president today going over pieces of it.”
“Is he making that announcement today then?” Alexander asked, to quiet laughter from Conway.
“Making what announcement?” Conway asked of an invisible Bud Abbott, probably.
“The announcement, the president said there was a big announcement in two weeks on healthcare, and it’s been more than two weeks,” Alexander repeated.
“If he wants to, sure he can, absolutely,” Conway said, then added “And you for 2 years that there was Russian collusion, and there wasn’t. So where is that?”
“I did?” Alexander said, as Conway lit into the deadline that Trump himself gave himself.
“I think he can have more than two weeks to come up with better health care in a country that, where the healthcare doesn’t even exist for 28 million Americans who were lied to,” Conway said, then launched into several false or misleading claims about the Democrats’ health care proposals.
Conway also flirted with the Hatch Act again by accusing Alexander of not covering stories about Joe Biden, to which Alexander replied “I covered the debates all week, thanks Kellyanne.”
