‘Totally Out Of Control’: Hakeem Jeffries Demands Alito Recuse Himself From Jan. 6 Cases

House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries slammed conservative Supreme Court justices on Thursday, while demanding Samuel Alito recuse himself from all cases involving Jan. 6.

Recently, Alito has faced criticisms over reports that he flew flags connected to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election — including an upside down American flag weeks after Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol building. Alito also flew an “Appeal To Heaven” flag, also known as a Pine Tree Flag — which dates back to the Revolutionary war but recently has become associated with support for Trump.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has also faced backlash over his wife’s publicized sympathies for Capitol rioters.

During a press conference on Thursday morning, Jeffries slammed the conservatives justices and called on Alito to recuse himself from any cases surrounding the events of Jan. 6:

Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas are totally out of control. These individuals continue to detonate the credibility of the United States Supreme Court. In the case of Samuel Alito, he definitively needs to recuse himself from any matter pending before the United States Supreme Court that has to do with the January 6th violent insurrection. He should have no part of it. Part of the problem that we confront is that the Supreme Court has chosen to conduct itself as if the judiciary is above the law. In America, no one is above the law. That includes the Supreme Court. That includes Samuel Alito, and that includes Clarence Thomas. If the Supreme Court does not get it’s act under control. You can be confident that Democrats in the House of Representatives are partnering the Democrats in the United States Senate will act at the first opportunity, we have to engage in thorough oversight and the consideration of imposing an ethical code of conduct on Supreme Court justices.
