President Donald Trump is lashing out over the trend of Republican members of Congress getting berated at town halls in their home states.
In a post to Truth Social on Monday, the president blamed the protests happening across the country on “paid troublemakers.”
“Paid ‘troublemakers’ are attending Republican Town Hall Meetings,” Trump wrote. “It is all part of the game for the Democrats, but just like our big LANDSLIDE ELECTION, it’s not going to work for them!”
That argument appears to be taking hold among Republicans. In a recent interview on CNN, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made the same claim, but then hedged somewhat after follow-ups from CNN’s Katilan Collins.
The AP reported Saturday that an anti-Trump protest group called Indivisible encouraged its members to protest at town halls. The Right-leaning Washington Free Beacon reported the progressive activist group MoveOn also organized town hall protests.
Still, several GOP lawmakers have acknowledged that some of the protesters are authentic constituents concerned about massive cuts in government spending which have been spearheaded by Elon Musk and DOGE.
