President Donald Trump threatened to slap even higher tariffs on Canadian exports into the United States on Tuesday after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau slammed him for starting a “very dumb” trade war.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Trudeau expressed his discontent at Trump’s decision to finally impose a 25% tariff on Canadian good, calling it a “a very dumb thing to do” while announcing retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods.
“Today the United States launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally, and their closest friend. At the same time they’re talking about working positively with Russia, appeasing Vladimir Putin: a lying murderous dictator. Make that make sense,” said Trudeau. “Canadians are reasonable and we are polite but we will not back down from a fight, not when our country and the well-being of everyone in it is at stake.”
For his part, Trump responded on Truth Social with the following message:
Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the U.S., our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!
The trade war has already resulted in a massive sell-off on Wall Street. Trump himself, meanwhile, has admitted that it might worsen inflation in the United States.
“I think what’s going to go up is jobs are going to go up, and prices could go up somewhat short-term, but prices will also go down,” he mused last month. “There could be some short-term disturbance, but long-term, it’s going to, it’s going to make our country a fortune.”
