5QQ: TheGrio.com’s David Wilson
David Wilson was first introduced to the NBC audience through 2008’s Meeting David Wilson – as one half of the David Wilson duo starring in the documentary. He has since gone on to become managing editor of the NBC News site aimed at the African American community, TheGrio.com.
TheGrio.com celebrated its one-year anniversary last month, and Wilson was recently honored as one of The Network Journal‘s 40 Under 40. Now he’s the latest media personality to answer our 5QQ – Five Quick Questions.
1) How do you get your first news of the day?
I normally roll over at 5:30 in the morning and I’ll check the NY Times, msnbc.com, and HuffPo to try to get the big headlines of the morning and to see if I missed anything in my 5 hours of sleep.
2) Either/or (gotta pick one): iPhone or Blackberry; Times, Post or Daily News; World Cup or Wimbledon; New York or New Jersey?
iPhone 4 ;-) , NY Times, World Cup, and definitely New Jersey (I was born and raised there.)
3) What’s the biggest story the media has missed this year?
That’s a tough one. There are tons of stories out of Africa – Like how China is really investing in the continent and will be positioned to benefit from its economic development for decades to come.
4) Obligatory Twitter Question: Describe yourself in 140 characters or less. (Hashtag optional!)
I’m an optimistic young man who loves life and is trying to make sure that I leave this world a whole lot better than I found it. Is that 140 characters? If not I’ll add this :-)
5) Are you nervous or excited about the future of journalism? Why?
I’m definitely excited because I think theGrio.com is on the right side of the future of journalism. As new media expands, niche or customized news and information becomes more important. We have a well defined niche audience in African-Americans and there is a strong desire for news content that affects us and perspectives that reflects us.
