As the world reels from the ISIS shooting at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey on New Year’s Day, there’s one somewhat positive story to take out of it, one of survival. Jake Raak, an American at the club who had already been shot, made the split second decision to play dead to become inconspicuous to the shooter. But as he told NBC News, there was a chance that even playing dead might not have worked for him.
“When he shot me I didn’t move — I just let him shoot me,” Aaak said. “I was shot when I was already on the ground. He was shooting people that he had already shot.” Raak explained that after he was shot, he was lying under a bench that the shooter walked past, and thankfully, he went unnoticed. “I saw him coming and he shot us all,” he said. “Somebody said there were shots fired and I initially did not believe it until I saw the gunman and he started shooting up the whole place. I was probably the luckiest person in the whole thing.”
The shooting injured approximately 60 people and took the lives of 39, almost all of whom were tourists and other foreigners. The suspect is still at large.
