Best Buy Apologizes for Joke About Serial Murder Case on Twitter
With the massively popular Serial podcast poised to air its final episode this coming Thursday, Best Buy’s social media team tried to capitalize on the moment by making a very specific joke about the show on Twitter. Later, someone at the company obviously decided that jokes about real-life murders might not be appropriate and decided to take the tweet down and post an apology.
The now-deleted tweet, screen-capped below, refers to an integral question of the Adnan Syed murder case that This American Life producer Sarah Koenig is trying to uncover on Serial. Specifically, was there a pay phone at the Best Buy parking lot where Syed allegedly murdered his high school girlfriend in 1999?

Later, the company tweeted out its apology for the joke, which could be considered insensitive to the murdered teen’s family:
We deeply apologize for our earlier tweet about Serial. It lacked good judgment and doesn’t reflect the values of our company. We are sorry.
