Boy Scouts Officially Ends Ban on Gay Scout Leaders

boy scouts gay prideThe Boy Scouts of America today officially struck down its long-held ban on openly gay adult leaders.

As of January 2014, gay scouts have been allowed in, but it took until this month for the Boy Scouts leadership committee to try and settle the issue of gay leadership.

The official BSA press release said that 79 percent of their national executive board voted to strike down the ban, but they also want to make it clear that “religious chartered organizations may continue to use religious beliefs as criteria for selecting adult leaders, including matters of sexuality.”

Boy Scouts president and former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates spoke about the decision in a video released online today, and explained that the current policy could not be sustained without serious strain being put on the organization.
