The Boy Scouts of America today officially struck down its long-held ban on openly gay adult leaders.
The official BSA press release said that 79 percent of their national executive board voted to strike down the ban, but they also want to make it clear that “religious chartered organizations may continue to use religious beliefs as criteria for selecting adult leaders, including matters of sexuality.”
Boy Scouts president and former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates spoke about the decision in a video released online today, and explained that the current policy could not be sustained without serious strain being put on the organization.
