Bush Sisters Pen Letter To Obama Girls: ‘In Eight Years You Have Done So Much…’

The daughters of George W. Bush, the Today Show‘s Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush of Global Health Corps, have written a letter to Sasha and Malia Obama ahead of the younger sisters’ departure from the White House. This follows the letter they wrote welcoming the young girls to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in 2009.

The letter was published by Time and read on Today. It featured highlights of the Obamas’ time as the First Daughters.

The women were complimentary:

In eight years, you have done so much. Seen so much. You stood at the gates of the Robben Island cell where South Africa’s Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for decades, your arms around your father. You traveled to Liberia and Morocco with your mom to talk with girls about the importance of education—girls who saw themselves in you, saw themselves in your parents, saw who they could become if they continued to study and learn. You attended state dinners, hiked in national parks, met international leaders and managed to laugh at your dad’s jokes during the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon, all while being kids, attending school and making friends. We have watched you grow from girls to impressive young women with grace and ease.

No one knows what it’s like to grow up in that particular spotlight like the Bush twins. The Obama girls were harshly criticized during their formative years, just like the Bush girls were.

The Bush women assured the Obamas that they “have so much to look forward to” as they begin “writing the story of [their] lives, beyond the shadow of [their] famous parents.”

Certainly, the Bush women have done that themselves.
