Both of Connecticut’s senators are railing against Ted Cruz after a Super PAC ad for the Republican presidential candidate evoked Sandy Hook to make a point about gun rights.
A voiceover in the ad — paid for by Courageous Conservatives PAC — says, “Ted Cruz makes things happen. After Sandy Hook, Ted Cruz stopped Obama‘s push for new gun control laws.”
On MSNBC’s Hardball yesterday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal told host Chris Matthews the ad “shows a basic lack of humanity.”
“What this ad reflects is a lack of humanity and compassion that is really offensive, insulting, demeaning, and disrespectful to those families,” Blumenthal said, adding that is also shows “a lack of leadership.”
“The President of the United States is a leader,” Blumenthal said. “I call on Sen. Cruz to disavow this ad.”
Sen. Chris Murphy agreed with his colleague, saying in a statement that the ad makes him “want to throw up.”
“Showing off how callous he was in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting may win him some right-wing votes that get swept up from Donald Trump or Ben Carson, but it disqualifies him in a general election,” Murphy said, adding “middle of the road” voters support expanded efforts to keep guns out of the hands of killers.
“But more importantly,” Murphy continued, “They won’t be impressed by a campaign whose opening pitch to voters is portraying the candidate as the one senator who took on the parents of Sandy Hook in the wake of the most horrific mass shooting in our lifetime.”
