Actress and aspiring New York governor Cynthia Nixon is calling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) a “terrorist organization” that ought to be disbanded.
Nixon made her comments last night while expressing support for Debora Vasquez-Barrios at St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church on the Upper West Side. Vasquez-Barrios, an undocumented Guatemalan immigrant and mother of two American children, is taking sanctuary at the church for fear that she’ll be deported under President Trump‘s policies because she failed to produce a drivers license during a recent traffic stop by ICE agents.
Here’s what Nixon had to say about this:
“ICE has strayed so far away from its mission. It is supposed to be here to keep Americans safe but what it has turned into, frankly, is a terrorist organization of its own that is terrorizing people who are coming to this country.”
She doubled down later on, tweeting a petition to abolish ICE while taking a shot at Trump directly.
ICE is a terrorist organization, and its egomaniacal leader is Donald Trump. Sign our petition to #AbolishICE: https://t.co/sZ3VF6lRhE https://t.co/qsB6XiJUJc

Nixon’s statement came after Trump and ICE endured a week of controversy over the president’s rescinded policy of pulling migrant children away from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border. The actress has been gaining ground in her attempt to challenge Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination, though recent polls show Nixon is still trailing him by 35 points.
Cuomo announced plans earlier this week to sue the Trump Administration for supposedly violating the rights of migrants at the border, but he also has expressed support for ICE.
