Cynthia Nixon: My Campaign May Be Over, ‘But The Fight for the Soul of the Democratic Party is Just Beginning’

Gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon gave a fiery concession speech after her defeat against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

She insisted that because of her campaign, the Democratic Party in New York is “stronger,” “more focused,” and “more progressive.”

“This is more than a campaign, this is a movement,” Nixon told her supporters. “And the movement that we are building isn’t just about one candidate or one election, it is about offering a vision of the way things could work if only we have the leadership the political courage to make it a reality. This race for the democratic nomination may be over, but the fight for the soul of the Democratic Party is just beginning. Because before we can take our country back, we have to take our party back.”

Nixon added that she was “sick” of the “Democratic establishment” telling candidates not to campaign on single-payer health care or abolishing ICE.

“If Democrats are gonna win in November, we have to stand for something tangible,” Nixon continued. “It is not just enough to be better than Donald Trump. We have to give people something to show up and vote for.”

She also gave shoutouts to other progressive candidates like gubernatorial candidates Andrew Gillum, Stacey Abrams, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and gave this warning to Democrats who “act” like Republicans.
