Debbie Wasserman Schultz Will No Longer Have On-Stage Role at DNC
Outgoing DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has confirmed that she is giving up her last role as an on-stage presence at the Democratic National Convention.
The Democratic Party has been facing major outrage ever since the leak of emails showing party officials conspiring against Bernie Sanders during the primaries. In a phone conversation with the Miami Sun Sentinel, Wasserman Schultz says that she will no longer gavel the national convention to order at the beginning and the end of the night.
“I have decided that in the interest of making sure that we can start the Democratic convention on a high note that I am not going to gavel in the convention,” Wasserman Schultz said. The news was confirmed by Jeff Zeleny during a CNN panel analyzing a rally Sanders was holding today in Philadelphia.
Wassermann Schultz’s move comes as a major development from Sunday’s news that she would be resigning as DNC chairwoman due to the explosive cotents of the leaked emails.
UPDATE: 2:13 p.m. ET ABC News reports that Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will take over for gavel duty.
