Democrats Will Not Boycott Benghazi Committee After McCarthy Comments

cummingsDemocrats on the House Select Committee on Benghazi will apparently not boycott the panel’s future hearings and investigations.

According to a statement sent to Greg Sargent of The Washington Post, the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), denied speculation that Democrats would boycott the committee in response to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-CA) comments connecting the panel’s investigations to Hillary Clinton‘s falling poll numbers.

“Obviously, this is an unethical abuse of millions of taxpayer dollars and a crass assault on the memories of the four Americans who died, and I believe it should be halted immediately,” Cummings said of the investigation. “However, I am not naïve in thinking Republicans will cease their political attacks on Secretary Clinton, which is why I will be in that room defending the truth.”

Clinton said McCarthy’s comments were “deeply distressing,” while Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) called on the likely-future Speaker of the House to apologize to the families of the victims of the Benghazi attack. House Speaker John Boehner defended his colleague, saying the committee “has never been about former Secretary of State Clinton and never will be.”

“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right?” McCarthy said on Fox News Tuesday night. “But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable.”

Here’s the full Cummings statement:

“As Rep. McCarthy’s statement made crystal clear this week, Republicans created the Benghazi Select Committee from the very beginning to wage a taxpayer-funded political campaign against Hillary Clinton’s bid for president. Obviously, this is an unethical abuse of millions of taxpayer dollars and a crass assault on the memories of the four Americans who died, and I believe it should be halted immediately. However, I am not naïve in thinking Republicans will cease their political attacks on Secretary Clinton, which is why I will be in that room defending the truth.”
