DOJ Launches Investigation into Baltimore Police Department

The Department of Justice tonight announced an investigation into the Baltimore Police Department. The Washington Post reports that the DOJ will determine whether the Baltimore police have engaged in a “pattern or practice” of excessive force.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake called for the DOJ probe yesterday, after requests were made by several city council members.

Police Commissioner Anthony Batts had this to say about a DOJ investigation earlier:

“I welcome with open arms the Mayor’s request for a Department of Justice review. We have never shied away from scrutiny or assistance. Our work is ongoing and anyone who wishes to be a part of helping the department better connect with the community will always be welcome.”

This is in addition to a DOJ investigation already underway to determine if Freddie Gray‘s civil rights were violated when he was arrested, and then died in police custody.
