Don Rickles Shocks Audience With Racially Charged Joke About Obama
Notorious insult comic Don Rickles ruffled some feathers during the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony honoring Shirley MacLaine, as he reportedly delivered a racially inflammatory joke aimed at President Obama. “I shouldn’t make fun of the blacks,” Rickles began. “President Obama is a personal friend of mine. He was over to the house yesterday, but the mop broke.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter‘s Gregg Kilday, the joke both stunned and amused the audience, drawing both gasps and laughs.
President Obama wasn’t the only black person Rickles went after with his trademark outrageous humor.
Kilday also reports that Rickles also singled out Dennis Haysbert, “on whose series The Unit, Rickles had appeared.” Rickles shouted, “Oh, there’s the black guy from The Unit…now he works for Allstate.”
The AFI Lifetime Achievement Honoring MacLaine airs on June 24th at 9 pm on TV Land — it was unclear whether Rickles’ Obama joke will be televised uncut.
