The comedy world lost a giant Thursday when Don Rickles passed away at the age of 90. A few hours after the news became public, one of the current kings of late night offered an emotional tribute to the legend — during which he broke down several times.
At the outset of a lengthy monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday, ABC late night star Jimmy Kimmel got real.
“I’m gonna cry,” Kimmel said, before immediately doing so. He added, “I’m not good at this sort of thing.”
Kimmel, who grew up in Las Vegas, spoke of the larger-than-life presence of Rickles in that town — where he so often performed. But Kimmel truly began to succumb to his emotions when talking about a personal bond he’d forged with Rickles in his later years.
“He would always ask about my parents, my kids, when my Uncle Frank passed away, I asked him to be the guest on that show,” Kimmel said — at which point he broke down again. “Which was a tough show. And he helped all of us through it.”
