Maybe its that I still have Rio on the brain, but when I watched the newest Dos Equis ad — which was just released this afternoon — I was struck by the familiarity of its newest Most Interesting Man in the World: a Mexican Michael Phelps.
Let’s back up a second. If you’ve lived under a rock or are averse to all things cool, Dos Equis beer has touted actor Jonathan Goldsmith as “The Most Interesting Man in the World,” a risk-taking daredevil of suave operation who always saves the day and takes home the beautiful girl. Some of his best hits for the Mexican beer include, “He’s won the same lifetime achievement award twice,” “He once warned a psychic,” and “He’s Santa’s Secret Santa.”
In March, the long-running ads starring Goldsmith in the title role were retired, with the iconic hero blasting off into space in epic fashion. Although they filmed a few spots featuring Erin Andrews and Luis Guzman presumably during casting for the replacement, the company made no sign about who would fill Goldsmith’s most interesting shoes… until now.
The new ad shows the new hero — whose block of ads will be released next month — ordering a drink and being asked by the bartender in Spanish, “Think anyone will ever be as interesting as him?” referencing the TV commercial on behind the bar.
The bearded Phelps doppelgänger smiles knowingly as the montage shows him casually chopping open a coconut with his bar hands and running down the street carrying a baby pig wearing a fez. “It’s hard to say,” says Mexican Phelps.
