Durbin Responds to Trump’s ‘Dicky’ Putdown, Insists POTUS Said ‘Sh*thole’: ‘I Stand By Every. Word. I Said.’
Yesterday, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to claim Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) “totally misrepresented” his comments during an immigration meeting last week. With Durbin having repeatedly confirmed reports that Trump called Haiti and African nations “shithole countries,” Trump hit back at Durbin by claiming he “blew DACA” while bestowing the nickname “Dicky” upon him.
This morning, Durbin spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill. And while he hedged when asked to respond to Trump’s putdown, the Illinois lawmaker didn’t budge regarding his stance on what the president said during that meeting.
In response to a question on GOP lawmakers impugning his credibility and stating that his recollection of the meeting was a “gross misrepresentation” of what the president said, Durbin let it be known that he wasn’t backing down.
“I stand by every. Word. I said — about what was said and what happened at that meeting,” the Democratic lawmaker strongly stated.
It has been reported that the White House appears to be hanging its hat on the possibility that the president said “shithouse” instead of “shithole” at the meeting. With it additionally being reported that Trump had called friends and bragged about his remarks last week, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders acknowledged today that “the president hasn’t said he didn’t use strong language.”
