Democratic congressman Edward Markey has defeated Republican challenger Gabriel Gomez in the Massachusetts special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by now-Secretary of State John Kerry, according to the Associated Press.
With over 80 percent of precincts reporting, Markey took a little over 54 percent of the vote, defeating Gomez by over 80,000 votes.
Markey will have to compete again for the Senate seat next year, when Kerry’s fifth term in the Senate would have ended.
