Enrollment in California Health Exchange Tops 400,000

According to the Los Angeles Times, enrollment in California’s health care exchange topped 400,000 for the first three months of the enrollment period.

Covered California said the preliminary figure included Sunday, on which 27,000 people enrolled in the state-based exchange (29,000 enrolled on Friday). Peter Lee, executive director of Covered California, said Monday was likely a busy day for the exchange, as it was for the federal health care exchange, which saw a record number of visitors attempting to enroll on the last day to acquire coverage that takes effect January 1.

California, a complex and populous state but one with a well-functioning exchange, has been looked to for the last two months by the Affordable Care Act’s supporters as a template for the law’s implementation at the national level. Lee acknowledged some technical glitches on the website and long wait times. But though CC did not extend the December 23 deadline, as the Obama administration did for the federal exchange, it guaranteed that those who started applications on Monday would have health insurance by the 1st.
