Everyone Thought John Oliver Was Going to Win the Emmy Except Him: ‘I Anticipate Disaster’

It seemed like a forgone conclusion to most people that John Oliver, and host of the popular HBO late night show Last Week Tonight, would take home the 2016 Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Variety Series. Sure, his category was competitive — Bill Maher, Jerry Seinfeld, even Awards show host Jimmy Kimmel — but Oliver’s last year on the Sunday night HBO platform took home the award easily, something that was obvious to just about everyone except the man himself.

“I know you were gonna win,” offered Kimmel to his guest graciously Monday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “Did you know you were gonna win?”

“Of course not, I’m British. I anticipate disaster every minute of every day,” he replied to Kimmel. He recounted how the ABC cameras left as the nominees were being announced, so he naturally assumed he fell short.

“I didn’t get do my ‘loser’ face or my ‘happy’ face,” Oliver said, who congratulated Kimmel on his work hosting the awards show Sunday night. There was one thing, however, about the Emmy Awards that left Oliver a bit underwhelmed.

“Here’s the thing,” he said. “I was under the understand that Beyoncé was supposed to be there.”
