Eyewitness Recounts Scene at Hoboken Station After Deadly Crash: ‘The Train Definitely Didn’t Slow Down’

An eyewitness to the deadly Hoboken train crash this morning recounted what he saw to CNN just moments ago.

Leon Offengenden said that the train — which we now know was train number 1614 on the New Jersey Transit Pascack Valley Line — “definitely didn’t slow down,” as it approached the Hoboken terminal this morning.

Offengenden said that “wires were hanging everywhere” from the partially collapsed roof at the station after the train jumped the tracks. “The windows were all mangled and crashed,” he recounted to CNN’s Carol Costello.

“Now looking back at it, it didn’t slow down,” he said of the train. “There was no break; suddenly, just a crash. So, something happened obviously — the brakes, or the train engineer didn’t brake as it came into the station,” Offengenden continued.

News out of Hoboken is still breaking, but at this time 3 people are confirmed dead with scores injured.
