FIFA President Sepp Blatter Resigns Amid Corruption Scandal

 

fifa-qatarSepp Blatter, the longtime president of the international soccer association FIFA, stepped down Tuesday afternoon following arrests of multiple deputies. Blatter had just been reelected to the position at FIFA’s meeting in Zurich last week.

“FIFA needs a profound restructuring,” Blatter said in a press conference. “That is why I’m going to put my presidency to a special elective congress to succeed me.”

The Department of Justice alleged that multiple FIFA officials accepted bribes and kickbacks from various countries in exchange for tournaments and sponsorships; Russia’s and Qatar’s bids for the next World Cups are also under investigation. Just yesterday questions arose about a $10 million payment from South Africa to the organization in 2010.
