Fmr. Mexican President Fox Slams Trump’s ‘Political Stunt’: ‘130 Million People Reject His Visit’
On the day when the Republican nominee is set to visit Mexico, the former president of our neighbors to the south used the opportunity to harshly rebuke the visit, deriding the episode simply as a “political stunt.”
Vicente Fox, who was President of Mexico from 2000 to 2006, has been a sharp critic of Donald Trump‘s for much of the last year. In May, Fox referred to the real estate mogul as, “the hated gringo,” and in February of this year he defiantly asserted, “[we’re] not paying for that fucking wall.”
Trump is set to visit Mexico today and meet with incumbent president Enrique Peña Nieto, a leader who has seen his own precipitous drop in the polls this year. Fox spoke with CNN’s Chris Cuomo this morning, telling the host in no uncertain terms, “[Donald Trump’ is not welcome.
He is not welcome, by 130 million people. We don’t like him, we don’t want him. We reject his visit. I don’t understand why President Peña has offered this opportunity. I think it’s nothing more than a political stunt.
Cuomo correctly pointed out that the invitation from President Nieto was extended to both Trump as well as Democratic rival Hillary Clinton; only Trump accepted. “Trump seized the initiative; why don’t you see it as a sign of, perhaps, improved relations?” he asked Fox.
“You can not take advantage of people all the time like he’s doing,” Fox offered. “You have to be straight, you have to speak the truth, and this is what he has done… it’s a very opportunistic move.”
“Trump is using the visit to boost his sinking poll numbers,” he concluded. Watch the above clip from CNN’s New Day.
