A person with a license to legally carry a concealed gun shot another person with a gun at a South Carolina club last weekend.
Jody Ray Thompson was arrested after allegedly firing his weapon into a crowd, wounding three people and almost wounding an armed patron who shot Thompson in the leg.
The local sheriff’s office said that Thompson is charged with four counts of Attempted Murder, Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The person who shot him will face no charges.
(The phrase “good guy with a gun” typically refers to an armed civilian who is able to prevent or stop gun violence. It was memorably articulated by NRA Executive VP Wayne LaPierre in 2012 shortly after 20 first-graders were slaughtered in their classroom. “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun,” he said.)
“And there you have it,” wrote InJo’s Justen Charters. “A potential mass casualty incident was prevented due to a civilian who was prepared to act in a time of crisis.”
Though Snopes cautions that “in the absence of additional details about the event, unequivocally stating that a ‘mass shooting’ was prevented is problematic.”
