Arizona Republican congressional candidate Gary Kiehne made a rather disturbing remark at a recent debate when, in the middle of remarks about gun rights, asserted that “99 percent’ of shooting “fiascos” have been caused by Democrats with guns. In audio obtained by the Arizona Daily Star, Kiehne said, “If you look at all the fiascos that have occurred, 99 percent of them have been by Democrats pulling their guns out and shooting people. So I don’t think you have a problem with the Republicans.”
Andy Tobin, who’s facing off against Kiehne in the GOP primary, condemned the remarks today and called on Kiehne to step down after demonstrating a “pattern of bizarre and deeply offensive remarks.”
Kiehne has since apologized, explaining that he based that comment on false information.
Kiehne today said he based the comment on information that he has since learned is incorrect.
“Simply put, I shouldn’t have made the comment, and I want to offer my apology for making it without any reservations,” he said in a written statement released by his campaign.
