GOP Directs Supporters to Call Opponent’s Elderly Mother

Releasing a candidate’s personal phone number and telling people to go harass him is a very old campaign trick, but the Michigan GOP screwed this one up big time: the number he gave out went directly to a Democrat candidate’s 91-year-old mother, currently living in a nursing home.

In a flyer, the Michigan GOP told voters to call John Fisher, a Democrat running for the House of Representatives, and tell him how disgusted they were with his Democrat-ness and Obamacaring. Trouble is, according to MLive.com, the number went instead to the Tendercare Portage, “where [Fisher’s mother] Isabel Kramb is currently receiving hospice care for congestive heart failure.”

“To direct people to call a suffering woman who deserves peace and comfort is beyond the pale,” Fisher said in a statement that also hit upon some convenient talking points. “I am disgusted that Republicans are recklessly bullying my mother when she needs rest and quiet the most.”

He then called on his GOP opponent Brandt Iden to denounce the Republican Party’s tactics, which Iden quickly did. “Obviously, as you know, it was not sent out by our campaign,” Iden told MLive. “I don’t condone negative campaign tactics and it’s not something my campaign has done or anticipates doing.

Ironically, this is what the flyer looked like:
