As the country approaches the one year anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, various memorials are being planned to remember the 20 children and six adults who lost their lives that day. Meanwhile, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) is promoting a Family Firearm Safety Event for Saturday, December 14th.
The congressman recently posted the flier below on his Facebook page, promoting the “educational event” on gun safety and responsible firearm ownership. “I encourage you to bring your family and friends,” Yoho wrote. “Looking forward to seeing you there.”
But according to the congressman’s spokesperson Omar Raschid, the event was not intentionally scheduled for the anniversary of the shooting.
“The Congressman’s prayers will certainly be with the victims and families of such an unspeakable tragedy,” Raschid said in a statement. “This event focuses on responsible firearm ownership and safety. Safety education is an integral part of responsible firearm ownership, and that is what the goal of this event is.”
