GOPer Who Posted Facebook Rant Against Muslims Resigns, But Isn’t Sorry

While not apologizing for his comments, Virginia Republican Party Treasurer Bob FitzSimmonds resigned Wednesday over a Facebook post slurring Muslim-Americans.

β€œIt seems that no matter how careful I might be, I will periodically give occasion for others to portray the party in a bad light, so long as I am a party official,” he wrote in his resignation letter. “After discussion with several party leaders it seems clear that I will either need to stop posting on social media or step down from my party office.”

FitzSimmonds had been responding to President Barack Obama’s Ramadan greeting that praised Muslims for helping to “build the very fabric” of the United States.

“It is one thing to be gracious on religous [sic] holidays, but this is pure nonsense,” he wrote. “Exactly what part of our nation’s fabric was woven by Muslims? What about Sikhs, Animists, and Jainists? Should we be thanking them too?”

Fitzsimmonds has a history of regrettable FB posts. He had previously posted about Obama going to hell and called a political rival a “twat.”
