High School Senior Asks Joe Biden to Prom, Upends 2016 Race
All right mortals, this whole “invite a celebrity to prom to get a quick hit” story is long past played out, so what’s say we end the trend on a happy note: Talia Maselli, a Connecticut teen, invited Vice President Joe Biden to prom because he’s “the most delightful man in America.” Enjoy that quote before cable news speculates as to whether it’s a shot at Obama.
“I am inviting you so far in advance because I’m sure many 17-year-old girls send you prom invitations, and I had to beat them to it,” she wrote to Biden, who has his own dwarf planet. “I could only tolerate a high school dance if I was to be escorted by the most delightful man in America.” (Maselli warned Biden that if he turned her down, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) was her backup.)
Biden couldn’t go, but like a gentleman sent flowers and a note. “I am flattered, but my schedule will not permit me to be in Connecticut on Friday evening,” the note read. “But I hope you will accept this corsage and enjoy your prom as much as I did mine.” He went on to invite her to the White House.
What should we take from the fact that Maselli invited Biden and not presumed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton? Is there an opening here for a challenge from Elizabeth Warren? Discuss.
