In their new tell-all book Let Trump Be Trump, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and deputy campaign manager David Bossie explain “crook” Paul Manafort’s dramatic rise and fall.
In an exclusive excerpt published by Politico Magazine, the two former campaign officials explain that even Manafort’s start with Trump was rocky as he endured a vicious phone call for canceling the then-candidate’s weekend TV appearances.
“Did you say I shouldn’t be on TV on Sunday?? I’ll go on TV anytime I goddamn fucking want and you won’t say another fucking word about me! Tone it down? I wanna turn it up! I don’t wanna tone anything down! I played along with your delegate charts, but I have had enough,” said Trump while shouting over the sound of a helicopter engine.
In one of the most Trumpian lines of all time, the president is said to have uttered the sentence, “You’re a political pro? Let me tell you something. I’m a pro at life.”
“I’ve been around a time or two. I know guys like you, with your hair and your skin,” he added.
As Manafort’s tenure with the Trump campaign went on, things did not take a turn for the better as bombshell-after-bombshell continued to drop exposing all of the ex-lobbyist’s shady business dealings. In response to the New York Times story reporting Manafort had received over $12 million from Ukraine, Trump said, “I’ve got a crook running my campaign.”
However, due to concerns of the bad PR, this did not end Manafort’s tenure with Trump. The campaign chairman was said to have been fired after his lobbying history was detailed in an Associated Press report:
“The kill shot for Paul came on Thursday August 18, when Trump was about to go onstage at a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina. A friend showed him a printout of an AP story written by Jeff Horwitz and Chad Day. Based on emails that the AP had obtained, the story described Manafort running ‘a covert Washington lobbying operation on behalf of Ukraine’s ruling political party, attempting to sway American public opinion in favor of the country’s pro-Russian government.’ It also said that Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, had ‘never disclosed their work as foreign agents as required under federal law.'”
Trump then had son-in-law Jared Kushner fire him.
Lewandowski, who served in multiple roles on the Trump campaign, and Bossie’s new book Let Trump Be Trump claims to be “the ultimate behind-the-scenes account” of the president’s 2016 victory and will be released in full tomorrow.
