Jeb Addresses Bush Foreign Policy Legacy: ‘I Am My Own Man’
Potential 2016 contender Jeb Bush is set to address his family’s foreign policy legacies in a speech in Chicago Wednesday morning, where, according to remarks released ahead of time, he is expected to delineate himself from some of the policies associated with his family name.
“I love my father and my brother. I admire their service to the nation and the difficult decisions they had to make,” Bush is expected to say. “But I am my own man -– and my views are shaped by my own thinking and own experiences.”
When Bush’s Right to Rise PAC launched, Mediaite noted its website didn’t even mention his brother, whose White House legacy, especially the Iraq War, remains in the tank.
“Each president learns from those who came before, their principles, their adjustments,” Bush will say. “One thing we know is this: every president inherits a changing world, and changing circumstances.”
However Bush is expected to call for a more hawkish foreign policy, including increased defense spending. Meanwhile, critics point out that his foreign policy advisors, including James Baker and Paul Wolfowitz, comprise key figures from his father’s and brother’s administrations, respectively. Wolfowitz, in fact, is considered by many to be the architect of W’s Iraq War, though he doesn’t like the title.
