Jennifer Lawrence: Kim Davis ‘Makes Me Embarrassed to Be From Kentucky’
In the December issue of Vogue, movie star Jennifer Lawrence revealed her disdain for Kim Davis, calling her the “lady who makes me embarrassed to be from Kentucky.”
“Don’t even say her name in my house,” Lawrence warned, referring to the county clerk arrested in September for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. Lawrence added that she can’t stand “all those people holding their crucifixes — which may as well be pitchforks — thinking they’re fighting the good fight.”
“I grew up in Kentucky. I know how they are,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence revealed that she was “raised a Republican,” but declared she “can’t imagine supporting a party that doesn’t support women’s basic rights.”
“It’s 2015 and gay people can get married and we think that we’ve come so far, so, yay! But have we?” Lawrence asked. “I don’t want to stay quiet about that stuff.”
Lawrence also repeated a sentiment she’s expressed in the past: “If Donald Trump is president of the United States, it will be the end of the world.” But, Lawrence noted, “he’s also the best thing to happen to the Democrats ever.”
This is hardly the first time Lawrence waded into political and social commentary. Last month, the Hunger Games star penned an essay for Lena Dunham‘s feminist newsletter Lenny, addressing the gender pay gap and sexism in Hollywood.
