#BlackLivesMatter Activists Secretly Seek Funding From Liberal Billionaire Group
According to Politico, leaders of the diffuse #BlackLivesMatter protest movement plan to meet in secret with a group of liberal millionaires billionaires to seek funding.
The activists will attend the annual meeting of Democracy Alliance next week in Washington, a secretive group of uber-rich liberal donors that includes billionaires George Soros, Tom Steyer, and Paul Egerman. According to Politico, the purpose of the meeting is to “[consider] ways to funnel support directly to scrappier local groups that have utilized confrontational tactics to inject their grievances into the political debate.”
Some on both sides are reportedly wary of the uneasy alliance. Democratic loyalists in Democracy Alliance worry about #BlackLivesMatter protesters’ habit of interrupting and calling out Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Meanwhile, some protesters are uneasy with the idea of allowing billionaires to exert their influence on a grassroots movement.
But other #BlackLivesMatter leaders believe the cash infusion is only a good thing. “Throughout our history in this country, there have been allies who have been willing to stand up and support uprisings, and lend their resources to ensure that people have a greater voice in their democracy,” said ColorofChange.org’s Rashad Robinson.
