Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was none too thrilled to discover that many of the ballots in Michigan were barred from her requested recount, prompting her to compare it to the racist voter suppression tactics of the Jim Crow era.
On Tuesday, election officials ruled that one-third of precincts in Wayne County– including almost half of Detroit– would be excluded from the recount. By law, the original election results have to stand if the final vote count does not match the precinct vote totals, as was the case in 610 of 1,680 of the precincts. The ruling served as an effective death blow to Stein’s recount effort: any success would’ve relied on finding large numbers of previously undiscovered votes for Hillary Clinton in the predominantly African-American county.
Stein took to Twitter Wednesday to compare the ruling to the decades-long systematic and violent oppression of African-Americans in the South.
