John Oliver Gives the Best Answer Possible When Asked If He ‘Feels Responsible’ For Trump’s Rise

Last night at the 2016 Emmy Awards, HBO’s John Oliver took home the statue for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, a distinction that has largely been set aside exclusively for the Jon Stewart-helmed Daily Show.

Armed with his statue, Oliver spoke with reporters immediately after Sunday’s ceremony, and the late night comedian was asked if he shares in any of the responsibility for the success that Donald Trump has had on the campaign trail.

“There’s been a lot of talk… that the media has contributed to [Donald] Trump’s success this last year, feeding the beat if you will,” asked one reporter. “Do you feel responsible?”

Oliver didn’t miss a beat. “Thank you, yes, it was an honor to win,” he said.

“Do I feel responsible for Trump? The short answer to that is no,” he offered. He also gave his brutally honest assessment for the “slightly longer answer,” to the silly question, which you can check out above via Variety’s Facebook page.

Last Week Tonight beat out The Late Late Show With James Corden, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld, Jimmy Kimmel Live from ABC, HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for the Emmy win.
