Lawmaker Arrested For Threatening To Shoot Colleague, Found With Loaded Gun

Nevada State Assemblyman Steven Brooks was arrested this weekend for threatening to shoot Speaker-elect Marilyn Kirkpatrick. Brooks was apparently unhappy with his committee assignments and was found with a loaded gun.

Police were called to a home in North Las Vegas on Saturday around 3:45 PM. The call was reporting threats to an elected official. After arriving on the scene, officers said they received witness statements supporting the victim’s report. They then began looking for Brooks.

The Assemblyman was seen at 5:30 PM the same day driving in the area. He was immediately taken into custody during a traffic stop. He was booked into the Las Vegas City Jail on one count of intimidating a public officer by threat of physical violence.

Executive Director of the Assembly Democratic Caucus Brendan Summers said in a statement, “We understand an investigation is currently ongoing and we have no further comment at this time.”

KNTV first reported the story. Brooks, a Democrat, spend the entire night in custody. He represents North Las Vegas and was first elected in 2010. The previous speaker of the Nevada State Assembly recently lost his bid for re-election. After Kirkpatrick was elected, Brooks sought a spot on the Assembly’s Ways and Means Committee, as chairman. He wasn’t chosen.

The Nevada State Assembly will reconvene February 4th.
