Mary Cheney, daughter of Dick Cheney and sister to Wyoming senatorial candidate Liz Cheney, severely denounced her sister’s statement on gay marriage, posting on her Facebook page that marriage was “not something to be decided by a show of hands.”
“For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage,” Cheney wrote. “Freedom means freedom for everyone. That means that all families—regardless of how they look or how they are made—all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other.”
Mary Cheney encouraged her Facebook friends to share the message if they agreed.
In response to a robocall telling Wyoming respondents that she strongly supported gay marriage, Liz Cheney definitively stated her opposition on Friday, saying it was an issue best left to voters in the states. (Opponent Mike Enzi, who also opposes gay marriage, denied his campaign’s involvement in the robocall.)
Mary Cheney married her longtime partner in 2012. Their father also supports gay marriage.
