Matt Damon revealed in an interview this week that the next Jason Bourne movie draws heavy influence from Edward Snowden.
There have been four movies in the spy thriller franchise so far, but Damon’s titular character did not appear in the fourth and most recent film. However, as he revealed to BuzzFeed, there was a reason he was waiting for another strong angle from which to continue the story.
The first three films, he said, were basically about the Bush years and they didn’t want to continue the franchise until they could answer the question “What does the character have to say?”
And then, lo and behold, Edward Snowden exposed NSA secrets and became the world’s most notorious whistleblower. That gave Damon and director Paul Greengrass a strong idea for the next film:
“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” Damon said. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
He didn’t say much else about the film, except that the plan is to start in Greece and end in Las Vegas (so basically, from crisis to excess).
