In between Irma, North Korea and Steve Bannon, the cast at Morning Joe took a moment on Tuesday to address comments made by Democratic Congressman Luis Gutierrez toward White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly.
Gutierrez got pretty nasty, saying in a statement earlier this month that:
General Kelly, when he was the head of Homeland Security, lied straight to the faces of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus about preventing the mass deportation of DREAMers. Now as Chief of Staff, this former general is executing the plan to take away their lifeline and taking steps to criminalize young people who live and work here legally. General Kelly is a hypocrite who is a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear. He has no honor and should be drummed out of the White House along with the white supremacists and those enabling the President’s actions by ‘just following orders.
It was a bit too much for the set — even at MSNBC.
“I served with the Congressman and like him personally but where do we begin?” asked Scarborough in disbelief. “Talk about the disgraceful, outrageous words that he used against a man who’s given his entire life and his son to this country in service in uniform.”
The show’s resident grandpa, Mike Barnicle, was even more upset.
“He should be ashamed of himself and he should apologize but he won’t because of the partisan and polarized nature of Washington D.C.” said Barnicle, “Congressman Gutierrez belongs to a body of people who work maybe two hours a week, legislatively they’re going to have four days this month, the remainder of the month to get things done. They’ve had DACA on their desks for over a year.”
Kelly, himself offered a rare public rebuke to Gutierrez, issuing the following statement Sunday to Fox News.
“As far as the congressman and other irresponsible members of congress are concerned, they have the luxury of saying what they want as they do nothing and have almost no responsibility,” Kelly said. “They can call people liars but it would be inappropriate for me to say the same thing back at them. As my blessed mother used to say ‘empty barrels make the most noise.’”
