Muhammad Ali: ‘I Am a Muslim and There Is Nothing Islamic About Killing Innocent People’
In the wake of concerns about backlash against Muslims over Islamic terrorism and Donald Trump‘s proposed Muslim entry ban, legendary boxer Muhammad Ali put out a statement today expressing his thoughts as a prominent Muslim figure.
In the statement, provided to NBC News, the former heavyweight champion says, “I am a Muslim and there is nothing Islamic about killing innocent people in Paris, San Bernardino, or anywhere else in the world. True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so called Islamic Jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion.”
He believes Muslims have a responsibility to stand up to people warping their faith to suit their own twisted ends.
And the last part is pretty clearly a veiled reference to Trump and the climate he is creating:
Speaking as someone who has never been accused of political correctness, I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is.
Ali and Trump have actually met in person before, though somehow Trump had blanked on that when he demanded to know who all the Muslim sports heroes are.
