NY Judge May Release Eric Garner Grand Jury Documents
A judge is considering releasing the documents in the grand jury that decided not to indict the officer who took down Eric Garner, who died after saying “I can’t breathe” several times.
Various protesters and civil rights groups (oh, and The New York Post too) have been calling for the release of grand jury documents, so the public can learn exactly what evidence was presented and how the jurors reached the decision not to indict on any charges despite there being very clear video evidence of what happened.
Justice William Garnett heard from people in a Staten Island court yesterday, according to The New York Times, and ruled that he will start hearing arguments later this month, on January 29th, to determine whether the grand jury information should be released.
Daniel Donovan, the prosecutor who presented the case to the grand jury, argued that releasing all that information would “lessen the adverse consequences of unsuccessful criminal prosecutions.”
