Popstar Demi Lovato Takes Aim at Transgender Bathroom Laws in Award Show Performance

On Sunday night, Demi Lovato performed her chart-topping single “Cool For The Summer” at the annual Billboard Music Awards, and the shirt selection of the 23-year-old popstar has many people talking today.

In light of the controversial so-called “bathroom laws” like HB2 in North Carolina, the conversation surrounding the rights and social accessibility for the trans community has never been louder. On Sunday at the BBMA’s, Lovato donned a “all gender” shirt as a spoof of sorts of the public bathroom logos while performing.

Many have pointed out on social media that in addition to the bedazzled shirt meant to make a statement, the set’s backdrop was reminiscent of bathroom tiles during her performance. Lovato was one of a handful of artists to outright cancel performances in North Carolina this Spring as an act of protest to HB2.

The Billboard Music Awards have earned increasingly high ratings over the past few years, and Sunday night’s show included a star-studded line up of performances from artists like Justin Bieber, Kesha and even Britney Spears.
